National Scholar presents Self-directed Learning and Assessing Development of this Skill

Dr. Debra L. Engle, a nationally recognized leader in medical education, will be presenting on self-directed learning on Thursday, October 29 at 2:00 pm in the School of Medicine Medical Education Building, Room 323.

Dr. Deborah L. Engle is a nationally recognized leader in medical education, assessment, and program evaluation with more than two decades of experience advancing health professions education. Currently a Core Scholarship Faculty member in the Office of Education and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine, she previously served as Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Engle has led numerous curriculum innovations, accreditation and secured funding for medical education research in assessment. An accomplished scholar, mentor, and educator, she has an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications, national presentations, and service.

A description on her presentation is: Self-directed learning supports personal responsibility for one’s own continuous growth and is a skill that physicians practice regularly. Yet, building opportunities for self-directed learning in the preclinical curriculum is challenging. This session provides considerations on how to integrate self-directed learning into the preclinical curriculum in order to nurture medical students’ development of curiosity and self-regulation.
